Friends of Eugene Public Library

 2014 Honored Friend is selected

Congrats to Ken Ehler,  2014 Honored Friend

He has been volunteer Second Hand Prose, our bookstore, manager since it opened its doors.  We are delighted to recognize Ken Ehler, volunteer manager of Second Hand Prose, our used bookstore.  With the building of the new Downtown Library, the Friends of Eugene Public Library (FEPL) could have its long desired book store.  FEPL held a contest in the community and the name, Second Hand Prose, was chosen.  The volunteer manager position was advertised in Library Matters, FEPL's print newsletter at the time.  Ken Ehler applied and was hired.  On February 20, 2002, Second Hand Prose had its manager!  Since that day, Ken has been involved in the various decisions regarding volunteer recruitment, store hours, book selection, and other details involved in getting a business up and keeping it running.  Ken is tireless in his devotion to Second Hand Prose; he calls it a “labor of love”.   FEPL continues to be most fortunate, indeed, to have Ken.  Please join us in congratulating him.

Now Friends and other booklovers from all over the world can access our online storefront to discover titles of interesting, hard-to-find, and First Edition books. All online orders will ship within two business days and are carefully packed to ensure that you receive your order quickly and in good condition.   and  for more information about Eugene Library Friends

Sunday Hours at Downtown Library shortened beginning July 6

Starting July 6, the Downtown Eugene Public Library will be open on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Previously, the Downtown Library opened at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays.  The reduction in open hours is one of the cost-saving measures taken to balance the City of Eugene budget for the coming year (FY15). The plan was developed by the Budget Committee, proposed by City Manager Jon Ruiz, and approved by the City Council on Monday, June 9.

The new budget's effects on Eugene Public Library services are: Bethel Branch will remain open; Sheldon Branch will remain open for one year while options for future funding are explored; and the Downtown Library will be open fewer hours on Sundays.  Hours at the Library's Bethel and Sheldon branches, and all outside book returns, will not change. Open hours at the Bethel and Sheldon branches were previously reduced as part of the 2012 budget.

According to Library Director Connie Bennett, "The decision to reduce these particular hours at the Downtown location was based on an analysis of patterns of public use. Our goals included ensuring as much access as possible to library services, and best using tax dollars to meet community needs in a fiscally sustainable manner."

We'll continue to let you know when it's time to speak up.  Remember, also,  to watch the  Friends  Facebook and Twitter  pages for more information. Thanks again!
